Cat smart, sassy, and funnyâbut thin, sheâs not. Until her class science project. Thatâs when she winds up doing an experimentâon herself. Before she knows it, Cat is livingâand eatingâlike the hominids, our earliest human ancestors. True, no chips or TV is a bummer and no car is a pain, but healthful eating and walking everywhere do have their benefits.
As the pounds drop off, the guys pile on. All this newfound male attention is enough to drive a girl crazy! If only she werenât too busy hating Matt McKinney to notice. . . .
This funny and thoughtful novel explores how girls feel about their bodies, and the ways they can best take care of their most precious resource: themselves.

In this engrossing story, Cat tries living like her ancient ancestors (no junk food or high-tech tools) and is thoroughly transformed. The smooth-voiced Kirsten Potter handles the narration of this story well. Her pacing highlights the elements of drama, mystery (what exactly did Matt DO to Cat back in sixth grade?), and romance. Potter's characterizations are a bit jarring at times, though--Cat's voice is often so sarcastic that it undercuts moments of poignancy. Further, Potter's attempt at male teen voices are a bit strained. This production includes a long conversation between Brande and the director of Compassionate Cooks, which offers fascinating insights into how Brande's practice of veganism prompted her to write this book. Can an American teen survive 207 days without junk food and modern conveniences? Budding scientist Catherine (Cat) Locke finds out the answer after embarking on her most ambitious experiment yet: living the lifestyle of a primitive Homo erectus
. Cat is determined to win a prize at the science fair and outshine her rival and former friend, Matt, âMr. I've-Won-More Science-Fairs-Than-Any-of-You,â but that's not her only motivation: she hopes that by following the diet of her ancestors, she'll shed some unwanted pounds. Going without processed food, technology and motorized transportation isn't easy (âA big fat Snickers and a slice of pizza would have made everything so much betterâ), but Cat learns much about herself and other members of the human species as she observes changes in her body and attitude, while noting how others react to her metamorphosis (namely, she's suddenly juggling the attention of several boys). Well-versed in adolescent emotions and behaviors, Brande (Evolution, Me, and Other Freaks of Nature
) offers a fresh, funny portrait of a strong-minded young woman hurdling obstacles and fighting cravings to reach her goal. Ages 12âup.
