LEADING THE WAY HAPPY 21ST TE WHARA • In another stellar example of a successful collaboration, boatbuilder Lloyd Stevenson and designer Bill Upfold have launched their 21st project. Te Whara V – a 16m Elite Mid Pilothouse – exhibits the pair’s trademark synergy. Clever design and exemplary workmanship.

Bon voyage CAT 1 rules and regulation changes • New Zealand-registered pleasure craft departing on offshore voyages have for many decades required a safety inspection. This is still the case, but the mechanism forobtaining one has changed.

Galley Gourmet • A collection of beautiful, fresh boat-friendly recipes by R Marine Flagship’s Rob Donley.

SURF & TURF • It seems the demand for amphibious vessels is showing no sign of softening, and with New Zealand manufacturers pioneering amphibious technology, more and more Kiwi boatbuilders are taking the plunge and adding amphibious options to their range.

SOUTHERN SUMMER ROADIE PART 1 • The look on Anna’s face as we cruised along Piopiotahi Milford Sound said it all: she was mesmerised. The water was flat, not a cloud stirred, and Mitre Peak dominated the skyline above us. It was clear from studying her face that the long drive to get here had been worth it.

Strange little flags… • Every yacht club has its own burgee, but their use was once much broader.

KIWI TREAT • Pontoon alloy boats are seriously good sea handling vessels. I should know, having fished out of many such boats of different makes, designs and sizes in 20 years of working in marine media.

BOAT BLING

Pillie power! • What is it about pilchards that makes them irresistible to so many fish?

Summer reading inspired by our Big Blue Backyard • The best time and place to curl up with a good book is during your summer cruise or boating day trips, in the saloon, cockpit, foredeck beanbag or under a beach-edge or riverside tree. Take your pick of comfy spots.

RETRO BOATS

5-raters and spoon bows too • For the last two issues I concentrated on the 2½-raters of the early 1890s...
