Grades 4-8 The encouraging tone of this Orca Footprints title comes largely from the author's commitment to walking the walk. Delisle incorporates personal experiences as she delivers facts about the fashion industry and tips for building an ethical wardrobe. The first two chapters dig into why the clothing industry is problematic, revealing a host of issues largely stemming from fast fashion. Some of these include pollution, excessive consumption of fresh water, sweatshop and child labor, cultural appropriation, and more. It's a lot to take in, but the remaining two chapters are devoted to making a difference by changing how we shop. Delisle encourages buying less, purchasing sustainable brands, and embracing "preloved fashion," whether through apps like the RealReal and ThredUp or clothing swaps and secondhand stores. She also adds to the three Rs of recycling, suggesting that readers research, repurpose, repair, and rent clothing. This book is well organized and features photos, "Fashion Fact" boxes, and examples of young fashion activists. Useful websites are appended to help kickstart the journey to a conscious closet.
