K-Gr 2-In this latest installment of the "Little People, Big Dreams" picture book biography series, readers are taken on a journey of some of the biggest milestones of Gloria Steinem's life. Readers see her realization that boys and girls were treated differently in school, her college days in New York, her journalism career, and her constant fight for equal rights. Each digital illustration appears on a spread that covers a different life event for Steinem; the illustrations are warm and colorful, with people of all races, abilities, shapes, sizes, and skin tones being depicted. The text is brief, not going into too much detail; understandably, some of Steinem's career milestones may not be a typical topic of discussion for a child, but the author adeptly conveys some of the ways women were treated unfairly (like married women were not allowed their own credit cards in addition to pay inequality). One particular story of Steinem's included is when she went undercover as a waitress at a Playboy Club ("Playboy" is not mentioned, but Steinem is depicted in the notorious costume) "to report on the working conditions that some women had to deal with." Back matter consists of a short time line of her life along with corresponding photos. VERDICT A good introduction to Steinem's life and work; purchase where the series is popular or for collections seeking books about strong feminists.-Kerri Williams
