Hightower's (Below, 2022) latest is about Cam, a widow who used to work as a detective. Her husband's death was the case she was not expecting to solve. She believes in ghosts, which appear throughout the novel. Discovering that her husband kept secrets upsets her, so she accepts the offer to move to a family ranch in Texas where the hauntings intensify, particularly for Cam's daughter Sammy. Cam develops a burgeoning romance, which also complicates matters. Deep-sea intrigue comes close to the end, as the mysteries around Cam's husband reveal a missing submarine, codes, and cryptic messages. The stakes rise as readers race to the ending to see if Cam will survive. Hightower excels at intense, character-driven tales and especially strong are Cam's relationships with Sammy and Dimi, a friend from her undercover days. Though the pacing is uneven at times, Hightower's skill at portraying strong female heroines who don't give up without a fight is on full display here.
