Tell Me About Oceans

Preschool-Grade 2 As a young girl and her father stroll along the shoreline, their conversation falls into a certain pattern. On each double-page spread, she asks him a question about the ocean, which he answers briefly. Each of her questions becomes the first half of a rhymed couplet, which is completed in his reply. In a sidebar on the right-hand page, a paragraph of relevant information provides a more complete answer. With the girl's curiosity as the impetus for her father to share his knowledge, they explore topics such as the origins of waves, the reasons there are tides, why the ocean is blue, and what lives in its waters. A map displaying our planet's oceans shows that, although people have given five specific oceanic areas specific names, those areas connect to form the ocean that "wraps around the earth." The text is simply written but engaging. Falkner, an Australian illustrator, contributes pleasing digital pictures that make good use of color and help clarify concepts for children in this inviting board book.
